I need to buy a tachometer for working on the 22RE. Anything special to look out for? Do the old kind that came with a dwell meter tend to work with the 22RE? -- Matt

There isn't any way you can set the dwell with a 22RE. It doesn't have points.

For a tach, I'd assume you could go old school on it - any diagnostic tach that senses voltage upon grounding the coil will work.

Thanks. I knew that about the dwell and no points in the 22RE. Most of the used tachometers I see for sale have a dwell meter and tach combined. I just need the tach function and I don't want to buy a Snapon/Bluepoint meter for $250. If an old school tach will do the job I may get what I need for much less (like $10) . -- Matt

You'll need to expand on that a little. I'm going to guess that 'DVOM" means digital volt ohm meter. Is that right and how does it work? -- Matt

I have an old dwell/tech/ohm meter from Sears that still works fine. Has a big dial and a 0-1000 low RPM range and a 0-10000 high RPM range. Or now I recently replaced my old timing light with a new one w/ intergrated digital tach and timing advance display.

Exactly! I see tach/dwell combo's going for pennies on eBay. I'm waiting for an industrial quality unit at a bargain price. Something with a large meter and switches for 4/6/8 cylinders and high and low range rpm.

I've seen new tachs that have an inductive pickup. That should work with any engine that has sparkplug wires. The idea of a timing light with inductive pickup and a built-in tach makes good sense. -- Matt

Yeah, that's what it stands for. Turn the dial on the DVOM to "4cyl" and attach the positive lead to the coil negative post, then ground the DVOM negative lead to a decent ground and BAM! You've got RPM. Works great for me.

So I guess that implies that you need an automotive specific DVOM, like the Actron CP7677... I think Matt was asking (and I was wondering) if there was any way to use a generic DVOM as a tach....
