Need a Spot
Hello I've been on the wire for some time. (on the gas side) I currently own a 1987 Mit. Montero 2.6 5spd.and i love this truck. Well my question is this. I'm about to buy a 1987 Mit. Montero 2.3litre turbo diesel thats registered in california. I haven't seen or heard of one around, So i think its a pretty good find.So all this brings me here. I'm in need of your guys help. What kind of performance do these trucks have. How do these trucks do on the highway (maxium sustained speed)? Is there any where on the web where i could look up some specs. on this truck. Whats the MPG? Hows it perform offroad? Anything i should look for? Thanks for all you help,
-Ed.

Hello Russ,No actually it's for me . I've never seen one either. I'll post pics. It's pretty neat. Looks just like a montero Gen 1. But of course with a diesel.By the way my brother still is interested in the your monty, But work really has him tied up. He's working at Shell, and currently they are on shutdown for maint (60days 12hrs. a day ). Tons of overtime..

It may have been an engine swap. Please post pics and let us know how it runs. How much are they selling it for? Just curious since I'm building the same '87 Montero diesel over the next couple of months here in Georgia.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
Most of us own Pajeros 2.5 turbo diesel. Not a big difference. My truck is also gen.1, 1990. It is ok on highway, making 25 MPG. I drive easy - 130 km/hour speed, didn't try faster - ( I have same speeding tickets, it is expensive!) Good engine response. 90km/hour - 2000rpm, 100km/h - 2200 rpm, 130km/h - 2800rpm. Driving is comfortable. I can't tell much about off-road performance, but thiese trucks are world famous of-roads winners, so you can rellay on it. I have an owner manual, if you need something specific - I can look for you. If the truck doesn' smok, no leaks - it should be ok.

Roll Me Over
Hi Vlad,

Could you do me a favor and look under the hood in front of the radiator and see if the gear ratio for your drivetrain is listed there? I'm wondering what the stock gear ratio is for a Pajero with the 2.3 or 2.5.

Thanks,

Pmontero

90km/hour - 2000rpm, 100km/h - 2200 rpm, 130km/h - 2800rpm.

Gen 1 must have a different gear ratio than gen 2 because I do about 2800 at 100km/h

Autos and 5spd have different ratios too.

Sorry, I didn't find anything about the gear ratio. There are lots of japanies stickers, that I can't understand, but noone has the numbers similar to gear ratio

There should be a tag on the right side of the firewall below the wiper or on the upper radiator support that lists the VIN, the engine and transmission types, and finally the gear ratio. The gear ratio will be expressed as 4.625 or 4.875, the two primary Montero/Pajero gear ratios.
