Getting the Wheeling Fever
My '88 SWB Montero is making a chirping sound that appears to be coming from the rear end or driveshaft. It starts when the vehicle warms up and increases in speed as I go faster. I jacked up the Rear and checked but no noise. After I put it back on the ground and drove it, it made the noise again. I'm concerned about driving very far until I figure it out. Thanks in advance for any help.

Check the dust shield around where the driveshaft mates with the transmission (or is it the transfer case? Hmm. Can't remember now...). Looks kind of like a tin can. Mine was loose and and would rattle against the spinning drive shaft, although it sounded more like I was dragging tin cans behind me on a string than a chirp.

Suspension noise? When not in drive, does this happen when the suspension moves & engine is off or only when the engine is running?

Eric, IIRC you're talking about the xcase output shaft dust shield. The tranny is connected directly to the xcase w/out any exposed shaft in between.

Mudrunner
Any time I have ever heard chirping from a rear drivetrain, I have replaced all U joints.
Never heard chirping again.

Roll Me Over
They do that when they want to go play in the mud. They get louder and also start whining if you ignore them... take him out on the trail... <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

My vote is the u-joints as well. Wiggle and rotate the driveshaft. If there is any play at all in it, they need to be replaced. If you haven't changed the fluid in the rear diff, transfer case and transmission, you may want to consider doing it as well.
