Getting the Wheeling Fever
I see alot of people changing to a solid front axle. I see that it can be alot stronger, but what are the other advantages?? Everyone seems to bash IFS, what are the reasons for this??? I can already tell looking around this forum, I am about to spend alot of money I don't have on some goodies for my truck.

unless you are going to do some SERIOUS offroading I dont think the solid front axel is that big of a deal.I read all kinds of stuff about guys having plenty of fun with the ifs.mine is a daily driver so I dont think I want a solid axel for now.I think a cam in the engine and a locker in the rear would serve my purpose better.but I dont know what you use your truck for.

Read my posts in this thread for my feelings on ifs. Granted, the 4" suspension lifts make the ifs a lot weaker, so if you keep it in stock form you should be ok. But if you go on trails where you actually NEED a 33"+ tire to clear obstacles and NEED to spin the tires a little, then you're gonna ka-plode the ifs.

if you can manage to drive with your head instead of your right foot, you can wheel your ifs pretty much any where you would want to go. if you are short on patience, and would rather just rely on throttle instead of driving technique, then you are going to break stuff. lockers are key to wheeling ifs in my opinion.

9+ years of wheeling IFS in the FL mud on 33-36s and I've NEVER had a IFS part break. Just have to repack wheel bearings pretty often and keep up on CV axle boots.

Sure, I've been through 100,000 idler arms <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />, finally got the total chaos piece and I've been good for some time now.

Depending on what your gonna be doing, I wouldn't ditch the IFS unless you want to run over a 36" tire.

Whats a trail? <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />

I live in florida, so there will be mud in my future, not rocks. I am rather patient, and don't plan to ever run bigger than a 34" tire I think. I have thought of going to 35's but I like the option of a 34 interco tire..

If you're gonna be in mostly mud you will be fine. Its the rocks where stuff pretzels.

Ans there are definently obstacles where you need to spin the tires to get over it. I don't mean get the tires going 80mph in 3rd gear, but rather half throttle spinning in 1st gear 4lo is required to get through rough trails and it does break stuff if you have a meaty tire.

I break IFS parts all the time..... but I break F350 parts too. I have a moto, "It dont come home unbroke".

If you keep the CV joints at decent angles and replace the stock carrier pin with a hardnened one you can romp on an IFS and get good results. That carrier pin has given me lots of greef in the past....
