 Tranny rebuild or replace?

Well, I was hoping to get lucky and find some worn-out or broken nylon bushings in my shifter housing...not the case, the were in really good cond. I have a 150K 1990 4x4 truck that won't stay engaged in 1st.gear and keeps popping out. I know this is common with high mileage 22re trannies. Is it the shift fork or bearings that need to be replaced. Any idea how much $ this would cost to rebuild? Should I rebuild or just look for a good used W56??

On my G52, it was bearings at 189K. Got it rebuilt; still driving it at 367K. You might want to see if Snohomish Transmission is still around. Google. Also consider www.marlincrawler.com and www.risingsunengines.comIf you get a used tranny, you're not getting a warranty, and you'll be back in the same spot you are right now. Currently, you have a rebuildable core. Shop around.

I don't shop for toyota tranny rebuilds, at least not after seeing what many people go through with the early transmissions in terms of miles between rebuild. I go to Marlin exclusively. It's one of those jobs I want to have done once and not worry about it for another 20 years.

Thanks for your feedback. I am going to check prices with a couple of local shops including Snohomish Transmission. How much $ am I looking at for the rebuild? Just so I know I am not getting hosed.

Well, we're at the end of the road up here, so ours are around $2K with a rebuild core. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif" alt="" /> At least the shop I had mine done at gave me a 12K mile warranty.
If you can get it done for under $1000 and get a decent warranty, I'd say you're golden. Check Marlin's prices too.

just my opinion, but i'd try and find a good used one. there is plenty out there, and at least around here, they are not very expensive.
you could easily buy one for 1/4 of what it would cost for a shop to rebuild it.

I hear ya. Up here, it's really Toyota country, and the junkyards are pretty well-stripped for those kinds of cores. I actually had to ship one up from Spokane to fill the hole in my '87. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/zombie.gif" alt="" />
