Need a Spot
My 2001 4runner 4x4 has the following problem

VSU off, VSC Track, and Check Engine lights are on. I have replaced the gas cap and seal.

I checked Engine codes using the reader at Auto Zone and got the following:

PO440 Evap Emission control system
PO441 Evap Emission control system Purge Flow Fault
PO446 Evap Emission control system Vent Circuit malfunction

I found these other items listed below as possible corrections on other posts on this list and wanted to ask those who have had problems with codes PO440, PO441, and PO446 what they did to correct their problems

Hose or tube cracked, holed, damaged or loose seal.
Fuel tank cracked, holed or damaged.
Charcoal canister cracked, holed or damaged
Vapor pressure sensor
ECM

There are so many vac hoses, how do you find one with a small leak?
Fuel tank cracked? charcoal canister cracked? Hole or damaged vapor sensor? How do I check for this?
What is ECM?

I think I will need to buy the manual but wanted to ask for advice first.

Thank You
Don

In an effort to find the cause of my check engine light coming on I removed my spare tire and tried to check all vacuum lines to look for a leak but was very surprised at what I found.

The charcoal canister is melted through the housing wall in two places, why would it do this? First I thought gas had gotten into it and melted it but on further examination I see the melted plastic looks more melted by heat. This part is protected by the spare tire so no way is it near the exhaust pipe

I found a used canister at the auto salvage yard for $70.00 and installed it. LetÆs see if the dash lights come back on in the next few weeks. It is possible that used part could be bad but for $ 70.00 I thought I would give it a try since a new part is just over $300.00

Anyone else seen a melted canister?

Never heard of that one, got any pics? It would be nice to see pics of the location too.

I do not know how to post a pic here so anyone wants to see it can email me at don.miller@mattel.com

You will notice the large hole melted in the top of the housing, you can even see carbon granules inside. Also there is some melting you can see on the side.

The holes are the top of the canister meaning facing up in the direction of the 4runner. Remember that this canister is well protected by the spare tire.

I have driven about 200 miles and the light have not come back on but I filled my gas tank the other day and now the gas nozzle shuts off and the fuel gage says my tank is only ¥ full, not sure why changing the canister would cause this or maybe it was just the gas pump I used.
