Man, I hate it for you, but I'm glad you're OK.

It should be repairable. It all depends on where the insurance company valuates your car. I think you'll be OK.

thanks for the concern guys. i got an estimate yesterday for $4,175 using used parts. needless to say they sent me to the total loss department for another evaluation. i'm not sure when my appointment w/ them is yet b/c i was in class when they called today. they also gave me a rental car voucher which i'm going to use tomorrow. i don't really need a rental since i have my truck but what the heck, its free and saving wear on my yota. as long as i can spin tires in it and get 30 mpg im happy lol.

i'm still unsure as to how the whole total loss procedure goes though. i have the right to keep my car w/o a salvage title right? i mean the nada value of it is $5800, and they go for a lot more than that on autotrader. i just don't want to get ripped off. but even if it is totaled i'm going to buy it back from them. the rims alone went for $1800 new. not to mention i could get at least $1500 for the engine. but i would much rather fix it.

but rich, which law are you talking about regarding accident repair. are you saying regardless as to how much it costs to fix, i can still get it repaired?

Make sure to have documented proof of the car being worth more than they're saying it's worth. So, if you can find several cars selling for more than what they claim it's worth, then you'll have a better chance of fighting with them and winning. I'd also take something to them showing the cost of any add ons that that car has, ie rims, etc.

I may be mistaking, but what I believe he was referring to is that you have the option of whether they repair it with new or used parts. And you can ALWAYS have it repaired, no matter the costs, as long as YOU are willing to pay for it. Insurance will only do so much for you. Once the cost to repair is something like more than half of the replacement value, they total it and cut you a check for what they think it's worth.

Yes. It'll all ultimately depend on what your insurance company values the car/damage at.

That's where it pays to have non-discount insurance, and to stick with the same insurance man...building the relationships is priceless. Erie would be quicker to total the car probably than state farm or Nationwide.

well i spoke w/ nationwide's total loss department in richmond today and they said that in virginia, since the repair would cost more than a certain percentage of the value of the car they can't pay to fix it. they said i could either take a check for $5400 and they would take my car, or i can keep my car and take a check for $4,487. after a little persuasion she said she would give me $4,887, let me keep my car, and extend my rental until wednesday. i mean, the rental is free. mine as well not put wear and tear on my vehicles lol.

she also said that nothing would be sent to the dmv reporting my car as a salvage. but it is going to be branded on my carfax saying nationwide declared it as a total loss, but i'm perfectly ok w/ that since i only paid $4300 for the car in the first place.

i'm still unsure if i'm going to part it out or just fix it w/ the money they're giving me. but i'm definitely leaning torwards fixing it since my body guy at eurofinish said he could fix it for a lot less than $4,000 and i wouldn't even be able to tell it was ever in an accident when he's done w/ it. since there's no hurry and both of my vehicles(gsr and yota) are driveable i figure i can just gather used parts slowly to save even more money. or i can just drive the car as is and pocket the $4,887, but i don't like my car being dented lol.

oh and the rental they gave me is an 07 mitsubishi galant w/ only 4,000 miles on it. but i hate that damn car. it just has a really cheap feel to it compared to the accord, or even the nissan altima. not to mention it's a lot slower despite all the hp numbers of the cars being about the same. so i just gave it to my mom to drive and she loves it lol. she's letting me drive her camaro z28 in the meantime <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/evil.gif" alt="" />.

Sell it as a fixer-upper for $2500. Add that to the insurance check and get another.

well if i wanted to part it out i could get at least $2 grand for the engine and another $1k for the wheels. not to mention all the other parts. but considering it drives perfectly fine as is, and it is a really nice car, i think i'm going to keep it. but i'm still indecisive about the whole thing. i'm just glad nationwide insurance was so good about the whole process. this could have gone a lot worse.
