the best way to repair is cut it out and replace with new metal. ive had not that great luck with rust-stopping products. even por-15 dosen't really stop it.

fix any structural issues, new sheetmetal etc. and paint it.

as far a preventing rust, the BEST possible thing you can do is keep it clean and oil undercoat it yearly. i live in NH and have to deal with lots of salt and general nastiness. the only reason both of my trucks are still in one piece is they were always oil coated.

Gotta travel to Canada to get it done, but that's a good excuse to visit old friends and drink some beer.

Yeah ... some great CANADIAN beer ...

Corey beat me to it.
My buddie's dad turned me onto spraying used oil everywhere. He puts it in frames, in doors, inside the fender wells, prety much everywhere rust starts.
Yeah, it's a hell of a mess but he has 2 old Chevy 4X4s, a 71 3/4 ton and a 74 1 ton, both in near perfect original shape that are rolling proof that it works. Both trucks were driven often and have been in PA since new.
Good luck.

I live in Mankato, MN. It is a river valley so they salt at mention of snow/ice/frost! Rust creeps into everything! If you don't want it to rust here, you don't drive in the winter. Has anyone tried those anode cathode devices, or those electric rust preventers? Supposedly gas stations use them on their gas storage tanks and ships use them on their hulls.

America's first fourwheel drive was built in Mankato, MN by Ernest Rosenburger in 1908 who founded Four-Traction Auto Co. on Hickory Street. The company though successful closed in 1913.
