Need a Spot
My buddy is offering to give me his '89 V6 montero. It may need a new engine because his mechanic told him he has coolant in the oil. He took it in because it was starting to overheat on him. I know it has a cracked exhaust manifold but he says it ran like a top before it started overheating....body and chassis in great shape..is it worth putting a new engine in it to do a little weekend Offroading?

Many of us here may say "absolutely!" but I guess that depends on what specific model it is. If it is an SWB (2-door, aka Short-Wheel-Based-model) the 89 SWB V6 is prized, particularly if has an auto tranny.

Besides, based on what you described as the problem, it may only be a blown head gasket. If you do the work yourself it's not that expensive to fix.

Then some of us will say "no you should pass, so where is this Montero anyway?"

It could just be a head gasket. Get the truck and check it out. If its more then what you want to deal with, sell it or part it out and keep the money for your troubles. Id keep it and start reading everything ever posted from this forum. All the knowledge collected here makes that Montero worth more. You'll see. Get it.

If you live close to upstate SC, I will take it. Wont hardly cost $100 to slap some headgaskets on and check the heads for warping. If it is a nice truck, and you are doing the work yourself it would be worth it. If you pay someone all that labor and it turns out you need a new engine, not it is probably not worth it. For not too much more you could get a used running one.

I just want to tell you both good luck, and we're all counting on you.

Yes. If you enjoy a SWB 4WD vehicle and would like a little more in the way of creature comforts than can be found in a CJ/YJ, yet still have it take you to any reasonable place, it's worth an engine rebuild, transmission rebuild, new front end, seat cover replacement, new weather seals, a fine Rust-o-leum spray job and a whole bunch more. I know.... I own what is probably one of the most expensive '89 SWB trucks ever built.... and rebuilt..... and rebuilt again.

Hey, he quit talking when we asked where the truck was.

WE really need more paranoids here. I get lonesome. And don't scoff. What if they really are out to get you??
