Getting the Wheeling Fever

I own a 96 rodeo and I have been off-roading with it for about a year or two and I think it is about time to find out from people that drive similar cars, what spare parts should I carry with me on the trail. Can you guys tell me what is most likely to brake? I want to be prepared as much as I can.I have an extra set of tie rods but that is about it./other than tools/.I have a 3" calmini suspension lift and a factory 2 piece rear drive shaft and it is not vibrating at all.Do you guys think that should be potential hazard? Should I have a spare one or get a one piece? tx for the help.

I'd get a one-piecer as its only a matter of time before your carrier bearing eats itself. As for trail spares, definitely a tie rod or two. Those are probably the #1 most prone to breakage thing on a wheeled 'Zu; and you can't get back home without them. The DOR tie rod shieldz or Independent4x beefy tie rods are a nice upgrade; but I'd still keep one spare around 'just in case'. As I said, you are going anywhere if one of those breaks. Other things like CV's can be replaced back at home.

I also carry spare belt(s). My engine uses a serpentine belt, so if it goes everything is gone.

By far, the piece of equipment I use the most on the trail is my chain saw. I tree over a trail can end a trip quickly. I carry a spare cv axle on longer trips like Uwharrie which last 3 or 4 days. Twice a broken CV axle shortened a multiple day trip. No problem getting home, but it disappointing not to be able to wheel the last day or two. I picked up a used OEM CV axle in great condition for $60 at a salvage yard. I hate the remanufactured ones. They sometimes bind, have cheap boots, and are not as durable.

If you're planning on driving through any mud, you might want to have a spare alternator on-hand (or at the very least, be ready to make a trip to the local auto parts store... in someone else's passenger seat <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> )

Make sure you have large washers installed on the bolts that screw into the upper control arm "fulcrum pin" so the poly bushings don't "walk"out.
Other than a few fuses and maybe a spare relay,think about a fire ext.
The 'zu's are pretty tough.

I carry an old belt, wont go anywhere without one. Also, extinguisher, spare CV, and all your lubes. I would make gearand enigne oil a priority.

The best thing to bring is a group of experienced wheelers/wrenchers with similiar vehicles as yours (Isuzus).
But regardless a basic list would include: Spare tire, and items needed to change it. 3qts engine oil and filter. tierod and tools to swap it. belts(s) maybe a spare hub or drive flange
Tools (probably a few things missing here) 8, 10, 12, 14, 17, 19, 22mm wrenches and socket (w/ratchet and extensions) screwdrivers wirestripper/cutter couple types of pliers 2-3 lb hammer misc wire, connectors and fuses JB weld Duct tape WD-40 (or similiar) funnel TP
You don't need to bring every imaginable spare part and tool on the trail. It adds unneeded weight, and really there is a limited amount you can (or will) fix on the trail anyway. You need the tools for the parts and things you can easily fix. Or to rig something to get you off the trail so you can hitch a ride in to town for parts.
Generally with use, you'll get a feeling for what tends to fail on your vehicle and carry the parts and tools for the items that will leave you stranded. Like tierods or the poorly placed oil filter on my 98.

2 Spare CVs 2 Spare Tie Rods Spare Belts Spare Cap+Rotor Spare Slave Cylinder Tranny/Brake fluid/Water/Oil Tools to fix said parts Chemtool/Goop/PB Blaster/Etc Spare Relays, wire, soldering iron, crimpers/ends, fuses Spare headlight bulb
I had a parts truck so I took ALOT of stuff for spares. Havnt broke anything on the trail eaither, just took a tire off the bead. Oh the list dosnt include recovery/rescue/survival gear.

1. Spare Tie Rods- the most breakable item on your rig. 2. CV Shafts - If you break it, you'll get off the trail, but you week is done if you don't have a spare. 3. 14 mm washers for when your shims fall out. Plenty of folks who have the blue UCA's have issues keeping them in there. While your at it, back the pivot bolts up with another nut on the backside and run a zip tie through the shims you currently have so when they do eventually fall out, they will not go anywhere. 4. Center pins for the rear leaf springs, seen those snap about a dozen times now. You'll want to bring a few C-Clamps as well to help getting them back together. 5. A drain plug that expands. Seen three oil pan plugs get ripped out. 6. one set of spare belts 7. One extra used wiper blade. 8. I wouldn't worry about the alternator......192,000 miles and still going on the original, as well as the original starter and coil pack. O' I'm in mud, sand, and water alot as well. 9. One spare transmission if you have a 4L30..........wait a minute, better make it two or three.
