You have a Gen1 V6.... the air comes into the filter cannister through the grille and then the area between the passenger side inner fender and the outer fender. IOW, it's not taking in heated engine compartment air as with some carbureted or TBI engines. Any cold air intake will probably give you even hotter air than you already have.... unless you use a snorkle as an intake.

Yes, the air is sometimes colder down near the pavement, but sometimes it's hotter..... just depends on the amount of sun on the pavement, the color of the pavement and the ambient air temperature.... more than likely, the air in summer is cooler at grille level than at pavement level if the road surface is black. It will also likely vary according to the time of day and cloud cover.

If you want to try a cold air intake, by all means do it, but be prepared to be disappointed with the cost/benefit ratio.... you still will have to route the air from the cold air intake to the filter housing in order for the MAF to work..... and the MAF is one of the most important contributing sensors to your EFI system.
