This may fall into the catagory of the drivetrain Bible but I feel the subject warrants its own thread. Anyways I think it would be good to have as a quick reference, as to what gen II parts will fit on the gen I and what mods if any are needed to make the swap, along with the know benifits or drawbacks.

So Far this is what I know:

Upper Control arms, direct bolt on will allow for correction of camber with a tortion bar crank.

Rear trailing Arms, Increased durability.

Coil Springs,

Rear Axle on coil spring (V6) models, has anyone done this swap and does the increase in width have affect on rubbing of tires during articulation? Is a custom drive shaft required if installing a 3.5SR locked axle into a GenI 3.0?

Anyways I hope some others chime in with their swaps and findings.

Also helps with cv shaft angle. Side affect of better camber.

Anybody try gen 2 tortion bars on a gen 1? Those that swapped to a rear axle with locker from a 3.5 SR gen 2, what were the issues you encountered?

Upper arm and steering tie rod needs to be shortened, other than that it fits great!

Sorry, I must have missed this thread first time around. I swapped in sway-a-way torsion bars from a 93SR in to my 91. Bolted right up, no problems. I also swapped in a 95SR rear axle into my 91. On the rear arms at the frame mount, you have to use the gen1 bushings, they are different. Everything bolted up. I swapped the rear drive shaft flange and Ujoint onto the gen1 drive shaft. I have not put many miles at all, my transmission crapped out 35-50 miles after the swap. From what I did drive, the disc brakes in the rear helped.

GTO, so the front brakes bolt up? I want to do that to my gen1.

I just want to tell you both good luck, and we're all counting on you.

GTO, that's really cool. I'll be doing the same swap in a couple weeks when I part my Gen 2 out.

I'd be really interested to know exactly what you mean by what's too long so I can plan ahead. Thanks!

Brendan

It looks like GTO swapped the full knuckles and is finding excessive positive camber as a result.
I have not looked but can the gen2 lower arm swap over to make a wider track and correct the camber?

How about a swap with just the rotor and caliper?

I can not wait till my gen2 comes out of the snow it is hiding in so I can get back to working on it.

I was interested in the rotor/caliper swap.. good to know the rest bolts up.. I will have to look into the lower control arm also since I hear that the torsion bars from a G2 bolt up. I'm afraid of how wide it will make the front though.. I am already cutting it close with the low backspacing on my wheels, and I'm at the legal limit without having fender flares.

Only a month and half to go.. I'll be graduated.. and can have a field day swapping parts between my Gen 1 and 2.

Anyone know how much a frame on a Gen 2 is wider than a Gen 1 in the rear? I think I might do what OKRED did back in the day and weld a new back end of the frame on my '87.. it's the only way to save it I think, and would it be too crazy to have an 94 SR rear frame on an 87?
