I just found a '92 3.0 auto with a LOCKER, I think..

What dose the air pump look like , the console is out and all over the place.

Air compresser activates it , Right?

Does the yoke of the rear driveshaft fit into a v6 manual t-case?????

Front end parts -- A arms ???

Is this an example of the RARE 3.0 locker I've been hearing about?

I think my next Gen 2 upgrade to my 89 will be the steering box. Lordtrunks reports better power assist with a 95 box in his gen1. My 89 is noticably harder to turn the 33's than my 95 when stopped. The 89 box has started to leak so the gen 2 box will replace it.

From what I understand from LT and Kevin C the bigger gen 2 box will need the top two mount bolt holes ovaled out slightly (.4") towards the center of the box. Other than that its direct fit. Larger shaft reqires use of the gen2 pitman arm.

I'll report back with pics when complete. It might be a while yet.

Afte that next up are a set of gen 2 upper contol arms and a set of 95 dual piston calipers both are sitting in the garage waiting to be installed.

You'll definitely like the front brake swap. Mine stops on dime and gives you plenty of change. Real straight forward. Had to massage the short metal line into the caliper. On one of my old posts I put all the part numbers for what I used.

On steering box the Gen 1 had a much beefier box on the LWB. Ratio on SWB is 3.5 turns on the 90-91 is 3.0 turns.

Yes, The larger box may be the same for all LWB (gen1 and 2) I want the newest I can get in order to try to get the most use out of it before a rebuild is required. I'll try to go with 95 or later depending on whats available.

I dont think I'll get to the steering box mod for a while. Gotta leave for another Iraq tour real soon, so I wanted to put a fresh set of pads on the 89 so I wont have to worry about the wife wearing them out while I'm gone. I figured I should change out the front calipers to the 96 SR units I had in the garage. Its a pretty strait forward swap as reported by Lordtrunks and Hazy. Heres a couple pics.

Here you can see the size differences in the hardware. Gen 1 is on top gen 2 on the bottom. The gen 2 pads have much more surface area, but are the same contour of the Gen1.

The caliper brackets need to be used from the gen 2. knuckle mounting bolts are the same size location. If you get the short metal brake line that goes into the caliper from the donor gen 2 it will make the job a little bit easier. One of my donor calipers had the line but the other one did not, so I had to "adjust" it slighly to get it lined up. I also adjusted the thin metal mounting bracket that goes between the soft and hard line.

I retained the gen1 rotors and splash shield. The splash shield requires some trimming/bending in order to accommodate the bigger brackets. For a more complete job one could swap to gen2 rotors as well as the splash shields. I'm not sure if the splash shields will interchange.

After:

End result is a noticeable difference in braking response. It now brakes like my wifes old jetta did. I think it will good for when and if I go up to 35's. I would reccommend it.

Gen 2 brakes are awsome, they will stop your rig on 35's with ease. The guy who worked with me on my car works in the local high end mod shop told me that the best 2 things on modifing a Pajero/Montero is that you don't have to limit the steering and it brakes like there's no tomorrow even with 38's on 14" wide rims.

That brake upgrade is now clearly on my "To do" list. Nice write up and keep the info coming.
