Is there an aldl connector on a 88 trooper with a 4ZE1 motor?

If aldl's are the technical term for code scanners, no... an '88 Trooper would have predated OBDII by quite a margin.

ALDL = Assembly Line Diagnostic LinkIt should be two wires right near the computer, but I don't recall where Troopers of that vintage kept their Os and 1s. Check on the transmission tunnel between the seats under a console or in the driver's side kick panel.

Should be two wires dangling left of the clutch pedal, probably behind the mat; One spade, one socket. When joined turn the key to the "on" position (not running) and the engine light will flash the code for any anomalies. First code will be "12" (one, one-two) which will flash three times before any other codes come up.

On my 1989 Trooper, the connection wires are located under the center console (between both front seats) right behind (toward the rear of the truck) the shifter area.

Lift the change tray.
You'll see two wires with spade connectors.
That's what you're looking for.

ODBI had scanners too.. they were just not as "universal" as the ODBII stuff.
Being that ODB1 systems were more manufacturer proprietary, aftermarket parts store code scanners weren't widely made.
The dealers had scanners they could hook up to the pre-'96 vehicles to read ODB1 codes.
I believe Isuzu's unit was called the TECH-1.

the OBDI electronic diagnosis used the TECH 1 and of course it was nothing like the consumer versions available for one and all for the 1996-> OBDII. The TECH 1 was from Vetronix (OTC?) and was (is) a complete deal with vehicle specific software program modules, adapters, etc. and reads the autotransmission codes too. and they not only read codes, but provide much more detailed data and with control features as well. and VERY pricey. (i want one)
the TECH 2 is the current configuration for OBDII.
