Are you talking about notching the crossmember for front driveshaft clearance due to diff drop?

Jerry sez that crossmember doesn't do much frame-wise and doesn't have to be very strong...BUT it does have to hold up if you land it on a rock. Folding it up into the driveshaft would be bad...

Only 4 wrenching weekends left before Moab! And I will be out of town for at least one of them...

Yeah, I'm a little worried about my spare tire that way...with less backspacing it sits out off of the door further and might be vulnerable in extreme situations...

Does your have mounts for a roof rack? Lots of room up there for a Hi Lift.

Not sure...the RS might have the same threaded holes under the rubber trim on the roof that the 4-doors do, and a rack can be adapted onto those, but I would like to keep the center of gravity as low as possible.

A rack would preclude fitting in the garage, too.

Yes, I am notching it, but I am also going to plate it to reinforce the notched section. This is the same approach that Sean and Michael took to this problem.

Just wish it was warmer here for wrenching...only 26 today, a record low for a high. Tomorrow my buddy and I are starting the front end swap work, but may be hampered by numb fingers...

This winter I picked up one of those heaters that mount right to the top of a propane tank. Does a great job of heating a 3-car garage when the temperature is in the 20's.

Don't you have to vent those?

I would definitely have a carbon monoxide monitor out there with you.

We had a halogen light in there with us today, and that sucker warmed the garage by 15 degrees...went from about 30 at the start to 46 by the end, made it almost comfortable.

Got the upper control arms swapped out today. Of course it took longer than I had hoped, but not as long as I feared (We did get it done after all ).

It took a 24" breaker bar and an assist from the Hi-Lift handle to break the bolts loose...twisted one half-inch extension into taffy, had to go buy a longer extension also...and a flare nut wrench for the brake lines that had to come off to get the control arm off, which did not prevent us from rounding off one of the flare nuts. A small pipe wrench was our salvation there.

In other words, situation normal

I open the double car door about 8 inches. It still does fine heating the space, but my garage is fully insulated.

Good point about the CO monitor. I will pick one up tomorrow.
