I'm going to head over to the junkyard tomorrow and get the Taurus fan. That black magic fan is just too mucch $$ for my budget, I still have to buy a new radiator

I'm also going to be looking for some relays. I've been told by someone that relays out of Nissan cars are the ones to look for, any comments on this?

Ok, I went a little more in depth, my friend saw it in a magazine on dug it up for me:

I think I'll see if I can find the Nissan connector it plugs into and just get a new relay at the parts store. That way I can wire it up to just plug in.

Ok, I got The taurus fan from the junkyard. Also picked up 2 of those monster blue relays for the fan with the part it plugs into as well.

I think I've figured out how I'm going to wire it up. I'll use 2 relays, one for high, one for low.
I'm going to run the low speed on that switch from summit from earlier in the thread (thx msrwerks!!). I figure the 200?F on and 180?F off should work well.

I'm going to have a toggle switch that will be powering either one of two relays. One side to the low speed through that temp switch, so the temp switch controls when the fan is on. The other to high speed, just on all the time. That way if low isn't cutting it for some reason I can run on high till it cools down. Low and high will both have an LED run into the cab so I see which is on if it's dark out.

Here is a diagram I drew up of how it's going to be laid out:

In doing some research on how many amps that relay is, I did see a few times that it is used to control the starter solenoid on the Nissans. Also seems they are prone to failure so I picked up 2 extras while I was there. Total cost for the fan and 4 relays, plus 3 cans of pepsi: $30

Gawd I miss US junkyards.

I was at a wrecker here in Germany yesterday... Needed a taillight housing and an Oxygen Sensor for an 89 Opel Kadett (same thing as a Pontiac LeMans POS). 20 euro each! $50 got me a light and a well-used O2 sensor.

I need to bring KY with me next time...

How far are you from Ramstein? They used to have a pretty good U.S. run yard just before the main gate when I was there about 6 years ago. They also had a dsn number so the base operator could transfer you if it's not to far to drive.

I too like the fan mod but one thing I found is that the hayden controller is junk. I'll eventually change to something better. And to a larger alternator, that fan draws a lot of power and you can see the rpm drop at idle about 150rpm.

Thats something I've been scratching my head about. My truck sees alot of mud, and every so often the alt gives out after an outing. I'm a little leary of having an expensive high amp alt in there just to have it go bad on me.

Oh the price of having fun

Only about 45 minutes away.

That yard is closed these days, however... Been consolidated with the Mannheim Sort Center. They are only open on weekdays from 8-4, so I have to be on leave to visit them. Mannheim is also about 45 minutes away (I am near Mainz).

Ok, I got a few more parts and I'm going to start putting this thing together. I got an on/off/on switch I'm going to put in the dash here:
[Linked Image]

Anyone know where I could get power for this that would be controlled by having the key in the ON position? This switch is just going to activating the relays so it shouldn't need much current.

Cigarette lighter is one option.
Or grab a volt meter or test light and probe around the fuse box.
