I graduated in 93, and the funny thing is anyone in agriculture class was allowed to bring a knife to school. Ag class was pretty much another shop class but instead of being just wood shop or metal shop it was a combo along with other things as well.For instance we had a cattle judging team,a forestry team and of course the ffa. Cattle judging was where you had to identify the type cow, tell if it was for dairy or beef and grade it upon size weight and so on. Forestry you had to identify trees, tell how many board feet you could get out of that tree and shhow which trees you would clear out to allow new growth and why you picked those trees.
With our teacher being a farmer and a avid hunter and fisherman we also learned how to properly field dress many types of wildlife, not so much deer as most of us was avid deer hunters ourselves. more along the lines of fowl,ducks turkey and so on. we also had a big buck contest during deer season where you put in money to enter and the one with the biggest buck,which was judged by over all size plus the standard boon and crockett scale. the winner took all the cash.
we also would move all the shop tables out of the way once a year and had a indoor shooting contest once a year (.177 cal pellet rifles)
The seniors in ag class would have a venison feast every year. That was for all that took the entire set of ag classes,members of the FFA,faculty,staff and the school board.
And as far as I know kids still get spanked in schools in VA.I know I got more than my share,which didn't hurt till I got home and the old man got home. then the whoopin he would bestow upon my <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/butwiggle.gif" alt="" /> would be worse than rolling in a nest of yellow jackets. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />.
I see the differance big time in the kids from the north and south. they don't allow corporal punishment in schools, parents are afraid to spank their kids,or just plain won't. Thus the kids are generally rude obnoxiouse brats. sure some are really good kids but for the most part they are friggen terrorists. For example My wife teaches at a school for teens that have mental,drug and variouse other problems. im not talking about down's syndrome,autisim and that type stuff i mean like scitzoprinics,kids that cut and burn themselves, drug dealers/users and the like.there are some students that have adhd and things like that that cannot cope in larger classes,and so on as well. But to the point she had a student last year that brought a loaded .45 to school on a daily basis, the kids was afraid to tell out of the fear of being shot,or beaten by this guy. This guy from what my wife say is around 6'4 220 and solid muscle. A chronic drug user,dealer,and general <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/butwiggle.gif" alt="" />. well the one day he forgot the gun the kids told my wife,she reported it to the then principle which wasn't going to do anything about it. The kid then found out the other 2 boys told and started to beat them pretty badly,my wife then went and called the cops. it took 6 cops to get this guy down,plus my wife got in trouble with the principle for going against him. personally i told her if he shows up tomorrow leave,and if the principle won't let you call me.luckily the kid has not been back since.
Now if the kid had whippings and parents that delt with him maybe he would not have been like this.For the most part the kids in this school have parents that don't care,are in group homes, or single parent homes that have that parent beliving that they are angels. We need more parents like we had, the kind that would grab a belt, switch,razor strap,or a paddle and wear these kids <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/butwiggle.gif" alt="" /> out
