Need a Spot

Hi guys I'm new here, I have reading this forum for a while, its great, lot of help.... Well I have a problem with my Montero, I have to try 3 times to start the engine when its cold, I already clean Inyectors, change spark plugs, fuel filter, air filter also clean throle body, clean IAC and It doesn't make a difference. What do you think I should do??
Montero 98, leaf sprung, GEN 2, SWB, 3.0 lt. V6 engine, 12 valve code 6g72. South America specs. Thanks!

Welcome - it looks like you're doing a thorough job the right way.

The next things I'd do:

1) check/set ignition timing
2) check/replace ignition rotor, cap and wires
3) check the coil
4) check all vacuum lines for leaks
5) check the thermo switch (2 vacuum lines on thermostat housing) - might be broken
6) check all around the intake manifold for leaks (use an unlit propane torch to see if engine rpms increase)
7) check the EGR system if you have it on your engine
8) check the purge system operation
9) check the resistance values of the MAF and temperature sensors.
10)check resistance of the IAC coils
11)check TPS resistance values
12)open the ECU case and look for capacitor leakage

Hopefully you'll find the problem before you get to the end of the list.

I'd like to re-arrange Franks list a bit.

1) check/replace ignition rotor, cap and wires
2) check the resistance values of the MAF and temperature sensors
3) check the thermo switch (2 vacuum lines on thermostat housing) - might be broken

I'd also like to know what your fuel pressure is on startup. If this is a consistant problem it would not be too hard to get the fuel pressure when starting.

When mine did that, it was the ecu coolant temp sensor, near the thermostat, terminals pointed forward, terminals in a T shape on the sensor. If it's dead or disconnected, the ecu goes into limp home mode, and doesn't give the engine enough fuel to fire up when cold. And there is no thermo vacuum switch on a 3.0...

WRT fuel pressure, I'm getting a little suspicious of original fuel pumps on any of these 3.0L trucks that are 10-15 years old. Several folks have replaced the pump recently on Gen1 trucks. That, in combination with my own experience on the S/C'd engine makes me wonder if all of the older pumps should be higher than usual on the suspect list. Granted, an FMU places a higher demand on a pump, but the recent pump failures have my attention.

It's not easy to check fuel pressure on a 3.0L unless you have the rail adapter - and even if you do, it's not a quick test.... the upper plenum has to be removed to easily get to the test adapter location on the fuel rail. An alternate test might be to disconnect the fuel line in a convenient spot and apply constant power to the fuel pump.

Another possibility that I didn't mention is the fuel pressure regulator, which could be tested with the pump if the test adapter is used.

You have a '90 model w/o EGR, so there's no thermo vacuum switch - BUT - there is one on the models with EGR. The thermo vacuum switch has 2 vacuum lines that open to supply vacuum to the EGR solenoid valve when the engine is warm. The plastic nipples get brittle and crack with age and heat - sometimes the crack is only partial, yet leaks air like a sieve.

Oh - another thing to check is the purge control solenoid valve operation.

Frank you are right about trying to get a fuel pressure reading W/O the factory adapter. My fuel pressure test kit comes with an inline schrader adapter, but of course then you either leave the adapter in place or replace with a barb adapter where the hose was cut. I guess I thought that if the problem is consistant then a dealer with the right adapter could check when cold. Usually cars tend to work fine when at the dealer and not when off the lot.

I had an instance last year of my truck not starting until I'd tried it 3 times. I had first started it OK backed it up to the garage to load and turned it off. On restart it did not start until I had turned it over and waited a few seconds then turned it over again. Took 3 trys. It had never done this before and has never done it since. I assume I had flooded it?? The other cause I thought about was the fuel pump relay not switching on immediately.
