Getting the Wheeling Fever
I had an '86 1/2 ton Chevy stolen from me in '98. It was lifted 4" on 35's with a 14 bolt in the rear, Dana 60 up front, TH400 tranny, was going to be my mud beast. Good looking truck, great condition. Never heard a peep after it was stolen, just vanished.

I had an ignition cut out on it, and the Club, lot of good that did me. I had the front driveline out of it to replace U-joints, had the rebuilt driveline in the garage, got up on a Sunday morning, hit the garage door button, uhhhhhh, why isn't my truck in the driveway. Walked out, looked left, looked right, damn, thought to myself, won't see that thing ever again. I still have that driveline in my shed, just can't bring myself to part with it. Brand new U-joints in it too.

Granted I did not have multiple layers of theft protection, but they got around my ignition cut out and club pretty easily. I would agree that you have to make it hard to take it away. The brake lock would make it pretty hard to get it on a flat bed also.

This still isn't 100% theft proof(could be towed away), but thieves are lazy and aren't going to take the time to defeat all of them, they will move onto an easier target. This is all you really need to do, is to make yours harder to steel then the next guys.

I had a truck stolen in 1998... A 1973 Chevy Custom Deluxe Stepside. Black on black, with the factory rust option, more primer than paint, a rotten wood bed floor, and the classic Chevy hood crease (anyone who had owned one knows what I am talking about). It had a removable steering wheel, removable radio, El Cheapo Realistic speakers mounted where the shoulder strap (optional) mount holes were located, kill switch for the coil, manual throw switch for the battery, wheel locks, and personalized plates... "73 SIDE".

It was hauled off on a flatbed in the middle of the night, right out of the barracks parking lot on Ft Eustis. The truck was recovered 2 weeks later, and I sold it to the junkyard for $50.

Why was it stolen?

I transplanted the engine from a 1969 Chevelle SS 396, punched it to 408, had a roller set, Gear Drive timing set, 11:1 compression, 1200 CFM carb, Tri-Y headers, Torker I intake, MSD Ignition, Muncie Rockcrusher 4-spd tranny, 3.73:1 posi 12-bolt, 1100 cca battery, and ran sub-10's in the 1/4.

Why did I sell it for $50?

When recovered, it had no battery, engine, seat, axle, tranny, dash, fuel system, ignition system, or rims... Stripped out, and sitting on blocks. The only parts recovered were the frame and rusty body, everything else was gone. It was found in the woods somewhere in Gloucester County, Va.

If they want it bad enough... It's gone in 60 seconds.

Yep if they want it bad enough they will take it, the only way to prevent it from beieng hauls off on a flatbed is to have it chained own, then the thieves could always cut the chain. Even with a brake lock a car can be pulled onto a trailer/flatbed. It might be a little louder, but if the thieves appear to look official, your neighbors wont say anything. A flatbed/tow truck look more llike your car is being reposessed rather than being stolen.

A buddy of mine had his clean and built '84 X-cab with all of the offroad goodies(ARB's, whinch, dual cases, etc). He always parked it furthest in from the street since it was only used to wheel. The thieves cut the lock on the gate, rolled his new Honda out onto the street, then rolled his truck out, rolled his honda back into the driveway and shut the gate. His neighbor 3 house down heard them fire up his truck(loud exhaust) in front of his house. The wanted his truck and came prepared to get it. I personally believe we should hang car thieves like we used to do with horse thieves, or atleast let their victims deal out thier punishment. Televised public caning, or better yet bull whiped would be a good start, we could hold it on Sundays(when no NFL). I know if I ever catch someone in the act of breaking into one of my cars they will get a good beating.

More than tread lightly. Leave it like you were never there, nor anyone else.

Body Damage is Cool
If you hang around these boards long enough you'll notice that four out of every five posts related to stolen vehicles originates out of California. I thought, "What's going on over there?!!" Then I realized that that is probably because many of the contributors to these forums are based there as well. A quick look at FBI crime statstics shows that car theft is really variable from location to location for reasons that are not clear to me. It is interesting to note that Phoenix, Arizona has an auto theft rate that's two and a half times as bad as Los Angeles. And that Detroit is even worse with three and a half times as much. Houston, Dallas and Atlanta are also really, really bad, but Austin, San Antonio, El Paso and New York City are low in the numbers. How do you account for that? -- Matt
