So, I've changed the front springs on my 4runner which raised it quite a bit and as soon as I tested them, my front DS fell apart at the slip, too short now. So, I measured up, got it lengthened, and tho it was close to perfect at first, the springs have settled a fair bit and now the dingin' thing is bottoming out (the slip). Now, I can get the DS shortened again, but really the issue is not much travel in the slip. What's the common solution to this? homemade square-tube driveshaft?

Yep, either a square tube shaft or a longer travel slip yoke.

I asked my local drivetrain shop and he said at least $250 to lengthen the slip yoke. I'll check around to see if any of my friends can build a square tube.

Roger, give him the link to the axle relocation plates. This way he can move the front axle forward either 3/4" or 1". Cheap and simple to get you wheeling again.

Check with any of the major fab providers for toyota - Marlin & All Pro - I believe one (or both) of them carries a long travel slip yoke that comes in well under $250. I bought one and if I recall right, it's very simple to install.. You have to cut off the existing yoke, but it basically slides right end and you just weld it up.

If you do it yourself make sure you phase it right and the d-shaft runs true.

is it the drive line or the dust cover. dust cover is not so bad, if the drive line bottoms out it pushes the cap out of the end of the drive line any ways. it is kinda messed up that that front moves closer on compression... vs the rear that moves away on compression. I am looking at the square ag shafts....
also thinking about the 6 sided steel shafts and a 6 point deep well socket..

Wow, that sounds like a good idea!!? I hadn't thought of checking the slip on a rear axle and - guess what - I have both the front and rear axles out of an '87 Toy pickup.
I'm gonna check that out! I guess I need to measure some more to see how much slip I need. One thing I've noticed while testing, is that my pinion moves up and down quite a bit. Is that normal and to be expected?
