Getting the Wheeling Fever
I recently replaced the timing chain in my '88 22re and now it has a major lack of power!! It barely has enough juice to pull through the gears! I set the ignition timing at 5 degrees before TDC. Im now thinking the valve timing is way out. I originaly set the camshaft sprocket slightly clock-wise (just right of the mark on the head) on the chain seeing as it will stretch back to center anyways right? Or should i have set the sprocket just left of center? The sprocket and chain wouldn't line up exactly with the little mark on the head so it was either/or. Sorry for the dumb question but atleast now i've learned that the haynes manual is useless <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" /> Any help with this ASAP would be great. Thanks.

Sorry man, with the engine at TDC, 0*, the cam needs to be just LEFT of center. About 11:30 actually. Be sure the rotor is at #1 post on the cap, then your golden. I "think" you can do this by just removing the valve cover, and not the entire timing cover. Others will chime in.

First of all, rotate your engine to TDC, THEN look at the cam mark as mentioned. If you removed the distributor without setting the engine to TDC when you started, then most likely is the culprit.

AND-- look at the rest of our website fellas, it's invaluable.

TC linky

Also, the toyota tech archive, open up viewing to all in the left window for some more 22Rx timing stuff.

22R carb is 0 BTDC timing with the vacuum advance off and plugged BTW.

Where is this "efi check connector" located?

Ok, im 95% sure everything is set as it should be but i still cant get this thing dialed in. Camshaft sprocket is just left of center, and i have set the ignition to 5 degrees before TDC with the T and E1 connectors shorted. And yet this thing still lacks power and doesn't sound too good. Also, to set the ign. timing with the distributor, its movement maxed out right at about 5 degrees, and then i tried moving the distributor gear one tooth and couldn't even get it close, is this normal? I must be overlooking something here guys so feel free to chime in.

Make sure your TPS is set correctly.

If the TPS is not adjusted correctly the efi system will not work correctly including setting base timing, etc..

Set the cam sprocket pin at 1200 and the crank at 0* TDC
Stab the dizzy in at 1200(rotor pointing up) and make sure the rotor points at #1
The bolt for the dizzy should be in the middle area of the elongated slot when all is good

Try resetting the timing without the connector in... Set to 12* BTDC.

If this works, your TPS is not sending the IDL signal to the ECU.

I ran into a similar issue whan I did my chain a couple of months ago. Truck started and idled great, but NO power. Long story short, the check connector wasn't shorted properly, so timing was off. It was the first time I had done it, so I was still learning. When you short out the connector, the check engine light should flash. If it doesn't flash, the short isn't working.
