It's a little of both. Under power the fuel/air mixture gets forced past the rings on the compresion stroke. Witch also explains your power loss due to the fact that the rings are leting some of the mixture and the force from the combustion into the crank case. Hence the high crank case pressure. The oil is getting pushed into the cylinders, past the worn rings/cylinder walls, by the high pressure.
