Was talking to a local tyre shop this morning and I asked if they had any 235/75/15 tyres and they said don't put them on they will be way too big for the engine to try and pull. I was under the impression that this wasn't even that big a tyre with other guys running 31's and bigger. Does this size tyre affect everyday driving too much and also how much does it affect the low range gearing for climbing and slow driving etc?? He put them next to my 215/75/15's and they were around 2" taller.

Well sine Tyre is a city in Lebannon and juts out from the coast of the Mediterranean Sea, about 23 miles north of Acre, and 20 miles south of Sidon. The name of the city means "rock" and the inhabitants are called Tyrians. On the other hand you can fit and turn a 30 or 31 inch tire with no problems on a Sportage, my 'small' ice tires are 235/75/15, and my summer tires are 30x9.5's, who ever told you that is talking out of their hat, and has never driven a sporty. The only diffrence you will see is your top highway speed will suffer, youre max with 30's will be about 120kph and around 110kph with 31's, and you'll be spending more on gas.

I find with the larger tires the sporty handles better than with smaller ones.

As long as it still has reasonable accelleration and can pull 100kph in 5th gear I'll be happy.

will barely pull 110 in 5th gear with 31's. but also dont forget that if the tire was 2" bigger sitting next to the sporty, they are only adding 1" to the overall! as well, take into consideration how much of it is caused by the weight of the vehicle as well compared to a completely unloaded tire.

20mm in width should only add 15mm more side wall at a 75 ratio. thats just over a inch bigger overall!
i wouldnt be worried about it. type of tread will also make a big difference as well.

Well I think 235/75/15's are just under 30" aren't they so should be be OK to pull 100k's in 5th no worries???

235/75/15 run 29 inches on the mark often times. Based on the above responses, you should have no problem doing 100 kmh. And don't forget to shop somewhere else.

I'm just about to throw a set of 235/75/15's on next week, so If you can wait I'll let you know what the difference is, if any. I doubt that 3/4 of an inch will take off that much speed. My sport can do 110km/h eeeasily on the 215 series, so i guess 100km/h on 235's shoudln't be an issue. I have ran 30s and 31s for about 100,000 miles now for every day driving. we have lots of mountains and high elevations here. I run them every day, I just shift down a little more than with the stock tires. In low range I have never had a problem with the power, It climes like crazy and will spin out the mud with ease. Just open up the intake and exaust a little and with the 235s you won't feel much of a differance.

before flipping my sporty, i was running 235's with absolutely no problems at all, the guy you spoke to is an idiot. hell, i'm putting 30x9.50's on the next one and all i'll have to do is remove the front bumper(or modify it a little.)
