My friend and I decided after a trip to the California Desert and me nearly tearing off the factory side step on my 2003 that we were going to fab something simple and and able to hold up to the occasional rock or ? This is what we fabbed up and are nearly ready to test it out, still need to finalize the mounting.

Main bar is 2"x2" .120 wall steel and the rest is 1"x2" .120 wall steel.

We are thinking that some 1"x1" may find its way in there to prevent a rock from getting wedged in one of the openings. This setup seems cool so far because I can still use it as a step to washt the roof, lol.

So far only spent $90 in steel. ( I am not counting the money I spent on new tools to make this happen )

GEN 3 Side Protection Ver 1

oh ... I thought you pulled the pants off your new car (GEN 3) and put them on a classic (Ver 1).

If you get a chance to post another pic before installation...one with them laying on the sidewalk would be cool. I cant really see.

We promise we wont copy your idea.

They look very nice and it looks like you did a good job. Remember I cant weld or fabricate so take my word at its very little worth. But they look light they might flex into the wheel well moldings also I think you should have went with thicker wall tubing. The placeent is visually awsome.

Looks good...I like the square and it turned out well...I will be going with round tubing with mine....and have a kick out kinda like the All-Pro versions I think...but tailored to the Monty of course...Then I am gonna skin the top and Dimple Die the top for traction.....Here is a plan that was made by a buddy of mine with Bend-Tech Software real quickly....
Make sure to post up the finished product as well....curious to see how they finished up...and get some pics of the mounting as well....curious how ya did that....I plan to use orig mounting points with some tough re-inforcements.....

Looks nice.. & new.

I know you're still finalizing the mount points but with the unibody on subframe design, I'm really curious where you'll mount the skids.

Same place you mount it on "body on the frame" vehicles.

Copy away! That would be the best form of flattery

Mounting....

Using mount points for the factory side steps plus a couple of additional supports to the chassis. Mitsu was nice enough to privide a couple of holes with captive bolts.

The main 2"x2" is mounted butt up against the inside of the rocker seem, lots of surface contact area, and the factory steps are held in by 10 bolts in 3 different directions, lat, vert, and long. We left space on the front for the planed triming to hopefull get 34"~35" tires in,thats if I can find the right wheels. American racing is making a a wheel to fit the H3 now, the "Chamber" 16x8 +20mm offset (5.25" backspacing) that should work but only in chrome, I won't do chrome.

My friend and I have sent them emails asking why they cant coat a few sets in teflon, or just leave them un chromed, but no response yet.

Sorry about not taking pice before mounting them, didn't think about it until after. I will have them down again in a few weeks, when I get back from Charlotte, NC. then I will take and post some pics.
