FYI:
For the first time since I bought my 2001 I had it serviced(including 60K maintenance) by a trusted Mechanic that just services Toyota. He stated the following:
He has seen the 2001 Tacomas need new timing belts and water pumps prior to the 90K Toyota reccommends. I had him replace it and he found the water pump was leaking a little.
In addition the tacomas emergency brakes have been sticking, he checked and found mine were. Something about the rear brake pivots, only cost $70. Strange since I never use my emergency brake.
He also did the following: Replace left inner tie rod, replaced exhaust hardware and gaskets, fixed the front brakes that a brake shop screwed up for me

How about engine size and location? Rustbelt could be the culprit for your ebrake, esp since you don't use it.
Your FYI, you can get a copy of the service schedule from Toyota if you bring in your VIN; they'll print it out for free.
Kudos to your mechanic; sounds like you have a good 'un. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />

I took my 2001 tacoma 2X V6 for its 90K at 107K to a large dealership in Boston, MA.
After spending $ 2000 for o2, tinming belts and water pump small water leak when they did the timing belt, they then mentioned frozen e-brake for $ 500. I said no. Never used it either. The service rep. said that I should use it ,monthly just to keep it working. I am going to put some ?oil? penetrating oil on it to see if this works.

One of the other things I do for going into/coming out of winter is to drop the spare tire, clean up the winch device, and put some antiseize compound in there. That's something else underneath the truck that's not used a lot, but should be inspected periodically.
