While driving to work this morning, after about 1 mile, the charge and brake warning lights came on. I pulled off, engaged/disengaged the e-brake to make sure it wasn't the e-brake switch (no difference), then drove home and swapped cars. When I got home, I parked, shut off the engine, then restarted it. It restarted fine (Optima red top is 2.5 yrs old), with the same two dash lights on. Anyone have this problem? I'm thinking the alternator probably bit the dust?

Someone remind me how to download the codes. I short out the plug in the left side engine compartment, turn the key to "on." Do I need to have the tranny in neutral and/or clutch down?

Sorry guys, I haven't been monitoring this board for a long time, at least not since I bought a 100 series as my new used vehicle and modded that. smile The 4runner has been delegated to DD work, currently at 200K mi.

Did the belt break?
Reason I asked, I'm kinda used to getting bad alts from the parts store and didn't even think to look at the belt when it finally did break.

Didn't have time to check, but I doubt it, as I just changed the belts w/ OEM ones 3 months ago.

Also make sure your brake fluid isn't low; switch in the cap. Thing sets off both lights.

If the belt broke, his temp would've pegged from the water pump stopping. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/scared.gif" alt="" />

I'd take a hard look at the alt. I had the exact same thing and it was the alt. but check your belt and fuses first.
