I had to seperate the tranny and transfer. The shift fork on the transfer wouldnt go far enough foreward. I tried just cracking them apart and still not enough clearance. So I guess I answered my own question. Yep.... at least on this particular transmission/transfer...they had to be seperated to remove the interconnect pin.
