Well for $150 you can buy a tow bar that you can use over and over. Or you can probably rent a one-way tow dolly and find some smaller tires to slap on the front for around $150-$200. I would go the tow bar route and just make sure your Amigo has a spare and your good to go. Oh yeah, you need to buy a set of towing lights to go on the back of the Amigo to be legal. Just remeber, RV'ers travel thousands of miles a year towing vehicles with a tow bar.

Billdo, I know where yo're commin from. goto a welder's shop and have 'em make you a towbar for cheaper, then disconnect the rear d-shaft, unlock the front hubs and take it easy. don't make it harder than it has to be.

Eh, I've rented from uhaul 4 or 5 times now, and never had the surge brakes not work. Some of the trailers look pretty beat up, but they all pulled ok.

But yes, if your Tahoe's brakes are up to it, go with the tow bar.

OK, now that I am seriously thinking about this....

When towing with a tow bar, what do you guys do with your steering, do you lock it out? I would hope so.

I'll field this one!

There is a spot in your ignition switch that umlocks the steering but leaves the electrics off.
It's forwrd with the key until the dash lights up then back one click. Had to think about that a minute. The column will be unlocked and the dash panel dark.

I've flat towed my Rodeo more than 50,000 miles and you can tow it with a Tahoe without a problem if you've got a 5 speed. If it's an automatic then your gonna want to remove the drive shaft from the diff.

There is a way to rig up a boat shifter cable to give you brakes on your Rodeo. It takes some work, but can be done either manually or tie it into the brake pedal. I've used both with my Rodeo before getting a Road Master Brake system on it for towing behind the Motorhome. If you build a tow bar with a spring loaded slide for the coupler you can make your own surge brakes. I'll elaborate on this more if you interested.

Since your military, (I grew up an Air Force Brat) I know funds are tight. A tow dolly could be your best friend if you get some small tires and wheels from the salvage yard fro the front axle. I have some one of my Troopers just to keep it off the ground.

I have tow dollied the Trooper with 30 inch tires with no problem. Just watch those sharp "U" turns.

Of you can afford it though I'd just rent or borrow a trailer to carry it to St Louis. Then go around the steep mountain passes.

We've towed through those places with the Rodeo behind the Motorhome and it would have been nerve wracking if not for the Road Master Brakes. They're not cheap though. You gotta be serious about towing a lot to justify that system.

What about finding a buddy in the Military who can drive it to the new station then hop a MACS home. ( Can you guys still do that?) A lot of my Dad's guys did that way back when.

IF your interested about the cable brake system shoot me a phone # and we'll talk about it cause it will take a good bit of typing.

Curtis

p.s.: Breaks over, I gotta get back to work in the shop.

NO. I has to be able to turn. If you lock it, it won't turn around corners. It will find it's way back to center once you straigthen out.

. . . if your alignment is reasonable! Some vehicles, like to lock the steering to one side; they will do a turn but then swing all the way out instead of centering back. I have know many people to "limit" their steering . . . not lock it out but not let it have full range either.

The 4500# tow rating on the 2nd Gen Amigo is only when using a weight distributing hitch. The tow rating without the weight distributing hitch is 3000#
I unlock the front hubs, and dis-connect the REMCO driveshaft. This allows me to tow at any speed for any distance without stopping. I turn the key to the accessory position, it unlocks the steering wheel and provides 12 volt power for the supplemental braking system. Our 2nd Gen Amigo is an automatic.
