i used the cover that goes over the fuel tank as a template...worked really good and easy to check your cuts...

the cardboard sounds like a great way to do it on other vehicles!

today the wood jig is ready to go. I used 1/4 plywood which is really thin and hard to work with. The advantage to this was that i could go out and fit the wood jig right over the fuel tank to KNOW IT FITS RIGHT!. Once the measurements are nailed down; someone else can use thicker wood in the future for their jig. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

I hope you mean your off to buy a welder. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

For what you will pay someone to weld up a few things, you could have your own. That fuel armor the kind of thing to practice on too. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/patriot.gif" alt="" />

My EYE is watching intently. I wouldn't mind getting a set made up for my 2d v6... at least until I can get a custom fuel cell made to replace the stock unit in a higher, less exposed position.

i agree with you. I know some people who have arc, gas, tig, and mig welders. I myself have taken a course when i was younger (cough , cough) and am fairly profficient although rusty with arc and gas.

for those of you who do not know. I am a Speedometer Tech here in San Jose California. I run a mobile service and travel from shop to shop. This means that i have made a lot of friends.

A month back or so i repaired a Speedometer at a machine shop on a Dodge Dynasty. I put out a little labor and no parts to repair his vehicle and in return he will be doing a couple welding projects for me. I really like to do this as we both benefit. Plus the guy is an old white guy who used to 4x4 and stuff. He thinks the armor is a great idea and gave me some pointers too.

that said; it is time to go to his shop(holloway machining) <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

Nothing wrong with the barter system. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

With my first Montero, my rear bumper and skids PT 1 were done on a barter system with me only paying for the materials and the guy doing the labor for me building a basic website for him. Unfortunately he lost his sight (too much boozing) and can no longer weld.

You got that right.

I once traded an old shotgun and a set of tires for a 77 Landcruiser FJ40. I ended up selling it for $2,500 - which was waaay more than what I had in the trade deal. I kinda wish I hadn't done it though. That was a pretty cool old truck.

A great many aquisitions I've made through the years have been trades.

By the by, I like your style in designing that armor. I wonder if a shop with a good metal brake couldn't do it without welding, though. Seamless would be slick.

87 Montero, bought new, by me -
88/89 intercooled Starion Turbo engine-
with awesome audio.

whoops!. there are problems.

the welder took one look and said "that's aluminum". and dammed if he wasn't right. I called the steel company and they told me that it was what i wanted!!??

how does "i need 3/16 steel diamond plate" mean aluminum????

it was even written on the order form??? He offered to cut it out of steel for me if needed but i think i am going to try this. It still seems very tough and not flexible at all so i feel it will work out just fine!

This means that we have to use a diferent welder and my guy did not have one. Lucky he has a friend who can do it for him.

anyone have any thoughts on this?

Bolt those aluminum plates to a steel frame. This way you can r&r the plates if necessary. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />
