So i pulled the 231 i was getting for free on sunday and it was 21 spline so a bunch of work for nothing. I really want a D300 and i have looked at them on car-part.com but i don't have the money to buy and rebuild one just yet. Being the broke ass i am i found another 231 that is a 23 spline out of a newer cherokee sport with low miles so i definitely won't need to rebuild it, I'm trying to trade my paint gun for it. If i get it i will make an SYE with a Montero pinion flange so that i can use my surplus of montero driveshafts and parts with a superduty slipshaft in the center. I should know this week if i'll be getting it, otherwise i will start saving up for a D300 and just put this on hold again <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

TOASTY go to the link i provided earlier in this thread and it shows how to change over the input planetary and shaft from one to the other. It looks like it should take a good half day and some RTV setup time. You can swap the whole plantary and shaft as a unit, you could also find one of those 6 planetary gearsets or drill and use the extra three from the other plantary. there are articles on how to do that too for extra input shaft strength. Ill ask around here at 4 wheel parts and see if they have any 231 inputs laying around I can have.

Body Damage is Cool
Toasty I would be interested in seeing this hybrid SYE you are talking about making. Sounds good. I think I am going to put this project on hold for know so I can focus on rebuilding the heads and timing belt service I am planning.

I don?t really want to put a bunch of time and or money into a 231 because i really want a Dana300 and any money spent on a 231 could have gone to getting a 300. The SYE i?ll be doing won?t cost me anything and it will probably only take an hour or less to do. The Later 231s have a long fixed yoke and the drive shaft slip yoke slides around it, it?s a really goofy setup. [Linked Image]

Rubicon express makes a flange that splines on and you drill and tap a hole to bolt it to the fixed shaft that you cut down. So i figure I can machine a montero pinion flange to be a pressed fit, use a dial indicator to check for run out and weld the flange to the shaft.

take good photos, I am gearing up to do this swap on my monty with the nv242. Also I am going to the yard in the next few days pull a few cases and look. If I see one with the short input shaft and 23 splines Ill pull the shaft out for you.

Got the NP231 mated to the doubler, still need the pinion flange, twin sticks, slip shafts and gas for the welder. I?ve been taking lots of pictures as I go and i?ll post those all at once when i?m done.
