Some of the above info is not quite accurate.

The only electrically-controlled part of a Gen I auto trans is the overdrive solenoid. Otherwise, it's all done through hydraulics in the trans. There is a TV cable to signal the "throttle position" to the trans, but again, it's a hydraulic/mechanical thing, not electric.
