Need a Spot
I have a 87 4runner, I just changed the timing chain, water pump, and oil pump. I got it all back together, set the timing and it will run at idle with no noises, as soon as i step on the throttle the engine dies. does anyone have any idea what might be wrong?

Sounds like you're a tooth off on the cam timing to me...

Hi, welcome to the board

Give this a read thru TChain R&R

and, from our Toyota tech archives,

Timing Chain tech

Yeah, sounds like you're off a scooch. Did you make sure the engine was at TDC before you pulled the distributor when you started? Often overlooked.

I don't think a tooth off would cause this. Why?

I advance my cam 1 tooth when towing heavy loads to lower the powerband... I get amazing torque off idle, right up to about 3,000 rpm. It falls on it's face after 3400 rpm, though.

If I retard the timing a tooth, I get no power off idle, but high rpm torque. I see no practical purpose for this setup, though, so I don't use it.

When spot on, I get decent torque from 2000-4000 rpm, and decent overall performance (EB 270/430 cam). It's a bit high on the powerband, but it suits me perfectly trying to run down the autobahn at 100+ mph.

I would be leaning more towards a torn intake boot. When he hits the gas, the tear opens, allowing enough unmetered air into the system to stall the truck.
