Carb is currently off as well as most of the front of motor. I intend to pull the drive train this summer and go through it (it's been sitting for 10 years now). I've got an aluminum intake and a holley 4 barrel ready to go on it. Got a good cam and lifters picked out too that should give it a little more umph! Looking back alot of the cutting I did up front wouldn't of been necessary if I had just had a custom radiator made to fit. Oh well the mistakes you make when you are young. As you can see in the pictures I just went with an old coil and points setup for the distributor. This made hooking into the stock wiring a breeze. No computers of hei to deal with. Also alot easier to diagnosis engine problems. I will probably switch out the point distributor for a mallory unilite setup.
When I first did the swap I originally put a Ford 3.8 in. Switched it out for a 302 because I didn't think it had enough power. When I switched to the 302 I didn't have to move the motor mounts or anything. Just unblotted the 3.8 from the motor mounts and tranny and dropped the 5.0 in. The exhaust and motor mounts lined right up. If you wanted to do this mod and not use a V8 then you could go the 3.8 route and even use some of the high output turbo'd engined that were put in T birds and Cougars.
Hope this give some insite into how doable this drive train swap really is.

David,

Thanks for loading up all those photos...about 15 minutes on my dial up to view the post, but definitely worth the time.

In your estimation, would a 5-speed, rather than the automatic, be a worthwhile consideration?

Thanks for the pics! I appreciate the effort. The block really is pretty small. I'm still weighing my options, but this helps a lot!

The real question is how much space is required for a 5.0 motor with a 4x4 drivetrain. Is there an EB with this setup?

Early Broncos (EB), basically 66 - 77 were available with either a L6 (200/240) or V8 (289/302) and associated auto or stick transmission. The Gen II (78-80.5) / III (80.5 - 96) Broncos were based upon the F-series truck and could be had with up to a 400 V8.

Bronco II's on the other hand were available with 2.8L / 2.9L V6's. By the time the same chassis got the 4.0L V6, the name was changed to Exploder. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/notooth.gif" alt="" />

If you look at it the way I did when I first was considering what to replace my 2.6 with, one side of a 5.0 is a straight 4 2.5l. A buddy of mine who helped me with the conversion had a F150 4x4 with a 351 and a stick in it with a creeper gear. In low 4x4 and in 1st gear at an idle he could get out and walk beside the truck. A stick could be a good option but since my Raider was an automatic already I just stuck with an auto

Ok.. smack me if I missed the answer.. but, this conversion would be possible if you found a 302 with a 4x4 tranny from a early Bronco? If this is the case, then I would definitely lift the body up 2" and modify some mounts for this transplant.

Setup doesn't necessarily need to be from a Bronco. The motor I got came out of ??? the yard already had it pulled. The transmission (C6) and transfer case (NP208 or 231 not sure which it is) came out of I believe a short bed Ford 150. I just looked for a Ford truck that had the front diff on the drivers side.

I installed a 350 small block in my 82 D 50 4x4. I used a Muncie SM420 tranny and an NP231 transfer case. I used the Ford F150 high pinion Dana 44 front axle.
I kept the radiator in the same place as the 4 cylinder one. The biggest problem was the bellhousing.
It is an enourmous amount of work but is well worth it. My truck Kicks Ass now.
