I'm planning on building a rear bumper with a mount for a spare tire. I want to be able to incorporate a flush mount reciever, some sort of carrier for the spare tire and maybe a removable rack for water/fuel. I've thought about the swing out ideas I've seen but they seem kinda flimsy with weight on them. I've also thought about a reciever based system but I wouldn't want it to bounce around at all, I want it to be solidly secure.

So what have you guys come up with?

Roll Me Over
There is a way to get a receiver to stay tight in the socket. Here is a crappy drawing and it works great. My friend used about a 60-degree angle.

Another thing you can use for a swivel is, go to a RV trailer supply, pick up a hub, bearings, cap, and stub axle, and go from there.

Yea Roger I like yours but its too much for what I'm hoping to do.

I'm pretty sure I wannt build off of a 2x4 steel bumper. I'll be fabbing up some new mounts that run straight off the frame so the bumper sits just below the tailgate. I'm looking for 1/2" of clearance between the bumper and the gate.

Dave thats a good idea, I just might use that. Especially if I used a bolt that is the same size as the lug nuts, it wouldn't be all that inconvenient.

here is my old bumper no longer in use. i built it for our yota box-tailgate fit. It mounts with 4 bolts directly to our stock bumper ¿s¿ curve bumper mounts that are bolted to the frame rail. No fiddling with fabbing a new mount i guess. I put a stuck dodge ram with just my sling loop to the side, no bending of any parts whatsoever.

This is pretty close to what im planning to build for my pickup, just out of round tubing, cuz i have free round tubing to build it with. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Yea I'm not so hot on the swing out system. I know people like brian have made it work but . . . Well maybe I'm still not sure, lol.

This is the rear bumper that my Father and I built last year. I have recently added a 90* compression latch to make the swingout more stable and as a secondary latch for safety. More info and pics are here .

Looks very nice.
I found that mounting the tire so low led to spare drag-itis however (one time even popping off!). My 35" spare top is about even with my roof now! (Much like Roger's.) No more drag-itis.
