If you are actually going to take the engine apart, I would be looking at the block for cracks, not so much the head. A buddy of mine is doing a CJ2 or 3 with the little Godevil 4 cyl flat head in it, and he had cracks in the block from the waterjacket to the outside, and between areas of the waterjacket, nothing to the cylinders or valves though.
