The short answer: the auto + only 6 psi of stock boost + the heavier weight of the 4Runner = not much seat of the pants reaction.

You can free up some noticeable power and improve the efficiency of the turbo by installing a bigger exhaust. A 2.5" downpipe to a 3" cat and 3" cat back will make the turbo much more responsive. This, plus a manual boost controller to bump the boost up to 9 psi, and you should be set, assuming the motor is in good shape.
