i had a few posts about 8 or 9 months ago about my turbo because it was bad. i finally found a used turbo reasonably priced and swapped mine out. i checked everything on it and seen no damage to it other than it had some slop in it. i visually checked everything that attaches to the turbo for crack or splits, and didnt see anything wrong. anyhow, i changed the turbo and still the same.
i have an 86 4wd xtra cab with an automatic and factory turbo. now im starting to wonder. can you feel the boost on this setup or is it kinda like a diesel turbo that runs smoothly but adds power. i used to have a 4 cylinder mustang with a turbo and a four speed and you could definately feel the boost in it. but a toyota truck with 4wd and an automatic is LOT heavier.
i hope this makes sense and im not just rambling on. i have not installed a boost gauge yet, so i cant give any specs about that. thanks

what is your problem? lack of power? even though it's a turbo, it's still a pickup truck with less than 150hp.
i couldn't tell you how it "feels", ive never driven one.

Theres not realy that much "seat of the pants" power feel with the turbo trucks/Runners as the motors are kinda' detuned. Even less "omph" with the turbo and auto combo but definetly more power than the NA trucks/Runners.
I would say it's working fine just from my experiences.
Mosk, Sundowner or DCG might have some thoughts on it though. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />

The short answer: the auto + only 6 psi of stock boost + the heavier weight of the 4Runner = not much seat of the pants reaction.
You can free up some noticeable power and improve the efficiency of the turbo by installing a bigger exhaust. A 2.5" downpipe to a 3" cat and 3" cat back will make the turbo much more responsive. This, plus a manual boost controller to bump the boost up to 9 psi, and you should be set, assuming the motor is in good shape.
