You must remove that clamp bolt entirely, not just loosen it. The shaft under the bolt is relieved to make room for the bolt, and if you don't remove the bolt, you will never get the shaft off of the steering box.

The same thing applies to the clamp bolt at the upper end of the lower steering shaft.


BTW, if you can afford it, I'd recommend replacing the OEM steering shaft with a unit made by Borgeson. They have needle-bearing u-joints at each end, and the shaft's length is adjustable over a range of about 6 inches. Just the thing if one has a body lift.
