ok, i just purchased my nice 1992 wrangler drove it home, parked it. started it up the next day. Today, i tried to start it and it wouldnt stay running. it idled so rough that it would die every time, and backfire. Now after trying to start it for a while it will not crank at all. nothing.

Take it back! Most if not all vendors will honor a 2 day warranty.

it was purchased from a private seller, returning it is not an option.

so when you jump it it wont even turn over?? check your electronics it sounds like something is either grounded or gone bad, start with the ignition system first and check it out like the spark, coil, distributor and so on

If you cant get there in a jeep you probably dont need to get there

Ok so you checked some stuff. It sounds like it is getting spark to start it just won't idle. Correct? Did you check the fuel side of the equation. Is it getting gas and is it getting gas all the time. Did you run out of gas? Did you get a bad take of gas? Check everything fuel related then let us know.

Greg I personally have never seen a tank of gas that wouldn't run..
May be the carb choke is doing either too much or not enough.. Does the choke pull off? Is it on full choke when it DOES start? Do you know HOW to start a carbed engine?

You are right and wrong. In theory gas should burn due to its nature. But, as is sometimes the case water gets mixed with the water the gas then will not burn as well as it should due to the water being injected into the carb or fuel injection. Enough water and it won't run. So one needs to get rid of the water. By either dumping the gas or using some other chemical that will evaporate the water away from the gas.
