I didn't separate mine when I cleaned it. If you REALLY want to clean it out good, first clean all the old grease up with a rag, and then either put it in a parts cleaner (which i'm guessing you don't have) or get a few cans of brake cleaner, and spray it down really good. Let it dry for a while, and then repack it sort of like you would a wheel bearing.

How funny, I'll be doing this later today. Cleaning/painting the knuckles now. I plan on Adam's method, lots of brake cleaner .

If they are stock Birfields just take them apart. It is not that hard and you can check the cage and the inside of the bell for cracks.

Not in my book, I would rather take them apart to make sure there are no cracks then have to change one out on the trail. That is just my opinion!!!!

x2!!!

better to take the time while you already have the axle torn apart now and inspect everything. i run Longfields and know i probably won't break them but i still tear them apart whenever i have the axle torn down for bearing or seal replacement.

No doubt about it. If one goes that deep without the teardown, it's a bad risk. Unless you like taking the front end apart for fun and spending extra $$ for seals/gaskets/ your time!
