Need a Spot
I have a 1994 YJ that runs fine for short distances, but if I drive it for 2 hours or more on the interstate it starts running bad, spitting and sputtering like it's not getting enough fuel or like it's running on 2-3 cylinders. I can pull over and let it rest for a few minutes and it will run fine for about 5 miles and then starts doing it again. I've replaced the:
1. plugs
2. wires
3. distributor cap
4. rotar button
5. air filter
6. fuel filter
7. fuel pump
8. throttle position sensor
9. fuel pressure regulator
10. oxygen sensor
11. exhaust manifold (it was cracked)
12. the fuel injectors have been checked

There's not much left to replace! ANY ideas would be greatly
appreciated!

Body Damage is Cool
Is it possible tha your fuel tank vent/vent hose is crimped or clogged? If the vent is plugged, you can develop a vacuum in the tank, especially when the engine is demanding a fairly large quantity of fuel. A clogged ent will usually let the engine run for a while, until the vacuum builds up and the fuel pump has problems overcoming the vacuum. If the engine is shut off for a while, the vacuum is gadually replaced, and the engine will run again for a while. To see if tis is the problem, wait until the next time the problem occurs, and then immediately remove the gas tank cap and try running the engine again. If it now runs good, check out the vent system.

When I dropped the gas tank to replace the fuel pump, the vent hose was crimped a good bit. I ran a large phillips head in it and thought I had opened it up. It was pinched pretty good before I bored it out. Would leaving the gas cap partially loose make any difference while I'm driving or would you replace the hose that was crimped?

Someone had also mentioned the EGR valve possibly making it run like it is. I thought about replacing it.

Thanks for your first response!

The coil is usualy the problem in similiar cases. As it ages it sometimes fails under a heat load. It is advised to change coils with sparks.
Also I think you have a cps on that engine, Cps are known to fail but usualy not in that manner.

The hose you refer to is simply the FULL hose! It has nothing to do with venting while in use. The cap ALONE is the vent part. I doubt that is your problem.

Would you recommend a Super Coil or just go with a stock version?

Absolutely get the stock one!! Any coil stronger than the stock one is meant for rpm and compression you do NOT have!!
Save your money there is NO GAIN from super coils.

I had kind of the same problem with my 1991 YJ. It allready started running, spitting and sputtering after some miles. At the end it did not restart at all. Replaced everything you did. Did not help. Then took the engine computer out of the Jeep of a friend and that worked all right. On EBay I looked for a used engine computer, because a new one is very expensive here in the Netherlands. Purchased one for $ 80 + shipping from I guy in the USA who sold his wrekced Jeep in parts. Since then my rig runs like never before. I suggest you try the engine computer swap. Good luck.

I bought a coil yesterday like BigJim recommended. I'm going to try the coil and the computer and see what happens. Hopefully these two options will correct the problem. If not, I'm going to try replacing the EGR valve. Someone suggested that this may cause stalling problems. Does anyone know anything about the EGR valve?

Do only one repair at a time so you will know what it was that was the problem.. The EGR is the very LAST thing I would think of.
