That's not what I wanted to hear! But at this point I'm willing to check everything that is suggested to figure out what the problem is. I was hoping it was an external problem, not internal. I will check the compression over the weekend and see what it shows.

I don't doubt that broken rings and busted pistons would be the source of the problem, but wouldn't it be smokin' like a barbecue grill if the rings were bad? Luckily, mine's not smoking at all. I'm plannin' on checking the compression tomorrow. Any thoughts?

KGH, mine wasn't smoking at ALL...and still ran OK around town...it was the idle that killed me. In all honesty, the tired old 4 banger had 145,000 on her, so I wasn't surprised when I found out that she was toast.

You can't expect reliabilty out of a 14 year old vehicle!!!

My next vehicle will be a Toyota or Ford pickup (we sold WAY less parts for those trucks than any other) or a Honda, umm, Accord?

American 4-bangers vibrate the fillings out of your head, i.e. Chevy Cobalts, Saturns, Escorts, Neons. There is NO comparison!!!

My Jeep is not my daily driver, although I do drive it alot. I'm not looking for so much reliability but just dependability. I do want to find the source of this problem so I can go on Jeep rides with my buddies and not worry that it's going to crap out on me. If I had the money to spend freely I'd do a V8 conversion and drop an LS6 or some other hot engine in it. But I'm on a budget like most people are and just trying to fix her in the most economical way possible to keep it running!

Body Damage is Cool
Ya lost me on your last post.

What's the difference between reliability and dependability?

OK, maybe I used two closely related words. The Hondas and Saturns he mentioned I would call "reliable" cars, but I expect my Jeep to be "dependable" on the trail, and on the interstate for that matter! Either way I just want it running right. It's now showing code 51 which is "Oxygen sensor, running too lean." I've replaced the O2 sensor and checked the vacuum lines. What else could make it run "too lean?"

I would guess running too lean could be a product of the iac or the tps maybe even the cps could be sending the wrong signal to the computer.

What's the deal with the CPS going bad? I've read alot of articles and posts about this sensor going bad and causing all sorts of problems.

Well the cps sits in the hottest most greasy, oily palce unde the hood... It is a simple electric thingy that counts the revs of the camshaft. It doesn't seem to go out more often than other electornic senders under the hood. However when it does go out it is usually a mystery as to what to do to repair the vehicle.
