Need a Spot
Hello,

Are there any markings to show if a Gen 1 rear end has an LSD or not? I've checked my books and the FAQ's but find no information. I'd rather not disassemble available spares if there's another way. [color:"black"] [/color]

Thanks,

Rich Smith

Typically there's an orange sticker or something on the driver's side door frame... I can go look at mine if you need a definitive answer.

Yes, I would like a difinitive answer. I was hoping there would be something on the Rear End itself. I'm finding a number of sideyard spares (complete rear ends) that have already been removed and the chassis are gone.

Are you just looking for a third member? I have a fellow that is willing to give me one if I come grab it out of his back yard.. but my montero dreams are dwindling and I don't think I'll have a use for it.. too bad you're not closer.. if I have time I might go up there and grab the rear and pull the third member.. would you be interested?

Spin one side, if the other side spins the same way, LSD. If other side spins opposite, open diff.

I just want to tell you both good luck, and we're all counting on you.

Yes. I've done that too. But it isn't always easy to break loose those rusted sideyard breakdrums either. So I was hoping for some external markings on the rear end.

Without markings, I guess breaking the drums loose and spinning the diff is really the only way to tell.

Thanks,

Thanks, but I think the distance between us would make the shipping cost too high.

I appreciate the offer though.

If you have the axle already out and there are no stickers on it that say to use special oil or additives, then you are left with either disassembly or the spinning tests. If the axle has wheels/tires on, try to roll the axle and 'steer' it...if it turns easily = open diff, turn hard = LSD!

Well, mine has an orange sticker on the drivers-side door jamb warning about not turning the rear wheel if only one side is jacked up. I didn't see anything in the FSM regarding differential identification. Sorry I couldn't be of more help!

There was an orange sticker on the back of the diff chunk by the filler plug re LSD additive required on all my lsd rear ends. Old brake drums shatter with 4lb hammer blows...
