Just got my first Monty (91 LWB)after years of wanting one. When I was younger I had several 4x4s including a CJ7, 2 Cherokees and Grand wagoneer that my wife drove most of the time while I got the sh*t car van to drive(isn't that how it works in your family?)
Anyway, before pulling the front door panels off my truck, can anyone tell me what diameter speaker will drop in at the bottom of the panel? Crutchfield says a 5", but most speakers in that size arena are 5.25" I don't want to have to cut the metal of the door hole and would rather fabricate some type of extender ring to allow the speaker's grill to mount, maybe 1/2" to 1" away from the face of the panel. Thus the rear of the speaker could probably fit in the hole.
I scoured the archives for info but didn't find anything related to front door speakers.
Any ideas or pics from what you've done in your truck? Will be adding a sub and power amp(s) and will also tie-in the existing dash speakers.
Thanks for the help.

Generally, Crutchfield does their homework. If they say a 5" will fit, the it's a 5" you need, or some sort of spacer ring to make a 5 1/4" work in the same hole. I'm sure someone here has put larger speakers in their Gen I, and will post up about it.

Try to get the spacer rings out of the back of a monty and use those. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" /> Russ <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/patriot.gif" alt="" />

Hey, Kinda off topic about the speaker in your door thing..But you said you owned 2 Cherokees before your 91 montero. In your opinion, which is better, the cherokees or your montero? And if its better or worse, how so?

Datadog, 5.25" fit but depending on depth may require spacers. I have 5.25" Boston Acoustic component's in the front doors on my 90 4 door. Needed a spacer to fit though due to the magnet size. You can find pics here... http://www.geocities.com/offroader_ii/modifications_audio.html

I have alpine 17c2 speakers in my 89 LWB. They're 6.5". I mounted the front ones in the door, no cutting metal just the door panel and drilled some holes. The back ones mounted in the stock location with new mounting holes drilled and some vinyl to cover up to openings to I could use the Alpine grill. I will try to get some pics up soon.

Man...make yourself an offset ring and hang some 6x9s in there. You can use the template that comes with the speakers to build the ring. You can just cut it out of plywood and cover it with the same carpeting material that would cover a subwoofer box, or you can build a really spiffy one out of machined aluminium like KevinC did.
You'll need some long machine screws to mount it all up.
That's what's in mine - with about a 3/4" offset. I'm working on my thirds set of speakers and still using the same offset rings. I did remove a little door metal for the most recent set, but they're Alpine speakers and the magnets are massive.
Holler back if you need more.
87 Montero, bought new, by me - 88/89 intercooled Starion Turbo engine- with awesome audio.

Holler back.
If I put in a crossover and mount some discrete tweeters, can I just surface mount them on the top of the dash and bounce the highs off the glass?
And has anybody fooled with the door/rear speakers on a gen2?
Not responsible for advice not taken...

No rear door experience here.
I can't see any reason why a set of super tweets wouldn't work just fine surface mounted on the dash and bouncing off the glass.
I mounted mine behind the original speaker grills in the body just rear of the front seats. If you want, you could put your crossover there too - just double-side tape it to the outter skin.
I used to run a full crossover box, but now just use the built in crosses in my amps. Both of mine are mounted under the rear seat. That's where my crossover used to live as well.
For my super tweets, I just put a filter in line to cut out everything below 9,000 Hz, so no need for the crossover.
