Bump stop spacers? #806608 04/19/07 04:12 AM

Need a Spot
My cv joints keep breaking off on my 94 4x4 Toyota pick-up and I have had just about enough.

I have a 4 inch pro comp lift with 26mm downey torsion bars and think that the bump stop spacers are not big enough and the wheel travels too far down and the cv joints over extend and break.

Do you all have a solution or a source for big bump stop spacers?

JB

Are you running a front locker?

If you jack up the front and then spin the front wheel with hub locked, you should be able to tell if the CV is binding up or not. If it is, just space the bump with some washers from ACE hardware or Home Depot. I have balljoint spacers that allow extra travel, but I wouldn't think with your setup this will be a big problem.

Its commmingggggg... <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/evil.gif" alt="" />

Check to see if your diff drop brackets are tweaked. When your cv breaks, does it actually "break" or just pop out so that it is able to be popped back in?

The bumpstop that limits your droop affects the upper control arm which is not affected by your 4" lift. Your kit should have 4" drops for the bumpstops which limit the compression on the lower control arm. If you don't have those spacers in then I suppose that MIGHT be your problem, but with the 26mm bars I doubt it.

Thanks for your contributions.

No I don't have any front lockers and I am not sure if the axle broke or just popped out. I think it just popped out but I can't see because the boot did not tear.

Here is a look at the lift and bump stop.

I checked to see if the Differential had moved or shifted but it didn't.

I have the problems with the cv joints when I am at the beach and I am usually loaded in the back and the front lifts up a little.

What do you all suggest?

Thats... weird. Check to see if the cv can just pop back in. You may need to take it out and tap it with a hammer.

Your bumpstops are setup correctly for your lift, which means the wheels, theoretically, have no more travel then they would stock. You could try extending the upper bumptops which limit your droop. I'm not sure if that is your problem though.

How frequently does this happen? I mean it is not uncommon to break a cv now and then when your spinning tires. But if it happens every single time you go in 4wd then yes something is up.

I will be jacking up the truck later today and pull the knuckle out to get to the cv joint and try to pop it back in.

It usually happens when it articulates while I am loaded in the back and the front is raised as a result.

It has happened 3 times in four years all during a similiar situation.

You could try shimming under the bumpstop to raise it up a little bit if you think that would help:

i really dont think that's his problem since he has the drop brackets for the lift and doesn't have low profile bumpstops.

so if this happens everytime you go into 4wd, they've been replaced before right?
