Need a Spot
hi,

just purchased my first mitsubishi diesel yesterday, it's my second diesel car, and i'm havin some problems. its a 1983 mighty max 4x4 turbo diesel

yesterday, cold started the truck when i bought it.... started right up, no smoke... sounded good.... so i bought it.

drove it home 4 miles no problemns, it sat overnight (i live in southern california, last night was cold but doubtfully below 45F), started it this morning glow plugs for 15-20 seocnds, started ok, warmed for 45-60 seconds, and then off i went... but i couldn't get more than 1200 rpms out of it... limped it back onto the drive way and now it'll barely idle then stall. i tried to bleed the fuel system and that doesn't seem to work. my skill level is above average for gas vehicles but with diesels, i undertsnad the principals, but lack the experience. can anyone put me in the right direction to troubleshooting my problems??

also i noticed this thing has an alternator and vacuum pump in one unit. interesting.... but i noticed mine has been loosened and i'm fearing it was done on purpose... possibly indictaing a bad bearing or something. sounds like an expesive unit... any ideas where the best place to get one is and potential price?

also, after driving it home yesterday i noticed that i couldn't hear the whine of the turbo.. on every diesel car i've driven the sound of turbo was evident. i can't hear anything on this one. are these normally quiet or is mine FUBAR?

any help would be appreciated
thanks

Can't help you with the rest, but I had to have my alternator rebuilt because of a bad regulator. Same thing as yours with a built in pump. They repacked all the bearings and would have replaced if required. I also got new brush holders put in. All for under $200cdn. So, I'd advise you to just pull yours out and get it rebuilt.

On the turbo pull the intake hose off check for oil also check the peller for movment in shaft if any of this is present its time for a new turbo. Also could be turbo is seized up and blocking air flow.

You can get a new alt at checker for about 150 + core reuse your old vac pump.

You should definitely be able to hear the whining noise. I would checked the turbo, it could possible need to be rebuilt. I don't see why it would be the alt, but who knows.

I'd still check the turbo in that truck its old make sure the turbine shaft is fine you don't want to suck parts of it in to that engine.
