Need a Spot

I have decided to rebuild my engine on my own and i really dont get some of the parts that come with the master rebuild kits you can buy online. How do you know what size pistons, piston rings, rod bearings or main bearings. if anyone knows how to choose what sizes to get or if you have redone you own engine and have any tips then just leave a comment and let me know.
