Getting the Wheeling Fever
I checked the brake booster last night with no change in idle. I did find a few problems with my choke though. First off the hose that supplies coolant to it is missing, and the spring inside the choke housing is broken. I've got a manual choke set up on my Samurai that I'm going to use for now. I bought the carb kit, and a few hours and lots of ziploc bags later the carb is all torn apart and soaking. It was like dismantling a big puzzle. Now hopefully I can put it all back together. Would you guys suggest getting a new mixture needle or any other parts while it's disassembled?

I wouldn't worry too much about the needles or jets unless they are visibly damaged. Just blow them out with carb cleaner and compressed air and you should be good.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
Well, the carb rebuild went well. However it did not affect the motors performance that much. At first when it was cold and the choke was full closed it idled really well and I initially though that I had solved the problem. However as it warmed up it became apparent that I could only open the choke up(manually, because the choke assembly is still broken)only a tiny bit. Then the engine began to run kind of rough and did it's intermittent growling or shaking of some sort. Here are some of the things I noticed/ideas:

1. It seems to run fine cold and gets worse when it is warm.
2. The mixture needle wasn't in horrible shape but it was visible that it had been turned in too hard and therefore was mishapen.
3. I was able to turn the mixture screw all the way in till it was seated but engine would still run.
4.The EGR is now cleaned out and apparently operating (engine dies when vacuum is applied).
5.Choke can only be opened a little bit which seems to indicate that it is starved for fuel and getting to much air.

If you can think of anything that fits the bill, please let me know.

Well, if your choke is broken, then you gotta fix that. Thats one of the most important thing son the carb.

If the mixture needle is visibly damaged, it probably isn't doing its job correctly - I would replace it.

Fix the choke, that'l make a HUGE difference.

my choke doesnt work after I rebuilt the carb either,I think I didnt hook up the linkage to the heater right ,runs good after I warm it up.are there any pics of the proper linkage set up ,the little arm into the heater coil etc....been thinking about a manual choke, like the old days

I'd read the choke adjustment section in the carbie faq. Its sound as though you have the linkage hooked up right if your choke is opening all the way. Maybe the housing isn't rotated enough and your choke isn't fully closed when cold?

Now that's where I'm baffled about mine. The choke has to stay shut even when it's warmed up to be able to run. If I open it up at all it dies. Of course the previous owner compensated for this by backing the mixture screw almost all the way out. That, of course is just a cover up to the real problem, which has yet to be found.
How about the head gasket? I got thinking about it and like I said earlier it idled really well when cold but when it warms up it does that itermittent growling/shaking at idle. It was very apparent that it instantly got worse when it reached operating temperature, which leads me to think it happens when the thermostat opens up. Would a bad head gasket lead to a bad vacuum leak? And shouldn't my oil look like a milk shake at the bottom of the dipstick? Right now it doesn't and doesn't smell overwhelmingly like gas either. I will do a compression check to see how it is doing as far as the rings are concerned. I did notice alot of oil on my spark plugs when I replaced the old ones.

would the gas smell in the oil indicate hg problem?

Sorry, I should've clarified that. If I'm not mistaken (which is not unlikely for me) the milkshake on the dipstick has to do with water mixing with oil from a leaky head gasket. Gas smell in the oil has more to do with blow-by and bad rings...I think.
