My thoughts:

Don't use the Duracool/RedTek kits unless you are very aware of the consequences. The stuff is basically propane and explosive - most garages with an AC tech won't touch the system if you used Duracool. If you mess up or still can't get the system cold, and decide to just take it in for the R134 conversion, most shops again won't evacuate the system of the Duracool, since it will contaminate their R12/R134 recovery tank.

On the other hand, I know of a few guys who used the kit and are happy. I ended up going to a garage for the R134 conversion in the end. They had an already contaminated system.

So what shop did you use to do the conversion? What did it cost?

Just recharged mine with duracool for the second summer in a row. Put in one can last summer, and just put in a new can Thursday past. Hopefully it will last till next summer.

Just got back from camping in Dinosaur park: AC was not just simply a convenience. Duracool is well worth it IMHO. Outside temp was 34*, inside was a beautiful 21* (digital auto climate control set on 20.5*).

Ahhh.. Dinosaur Park, We camped there a few years ago, and it was hot enough that my relatively conservative wife took off her... never mind. It's past PG.
Glad to hear you're happy with your A/C Phil. I think I'll just hold off until next summer and get it done by a shop. Mine's still ok, I just had a couple of new rentals that were ice-cold.

I went to Autotemp in the NE. They not only did a good job, but the tech was familiar with Pajeros! 90 day warranty, and they added the dye to check for leaks. What I like is that now I can go to any AC shop for work on the system.

Do you remember what they charged you? Also what all they did to make it R134 compatible? AC is one of those things that disreputable shops rip people off on, as most consumers are not sure how it all works, and what exactly the shop is doing for their money. So the more information you can give us the better informed we can be as consumers.

It was around $230 if I remember right. Have the receipt in my truck. Full evac, new fittings and recharge with R134, UV dye and lube oil. Check hoses and connections. Did not replace the receiver/dryer which I read is the best way to go for a proper full conversion.

With a name like AutoTemp and the tech knew what a Pajero was, I figured they were worth a shot.

Thanks for the info. The Walmart down here in Anaheim has cans of R134 for $6.95! So changing over would definitely be a bonus for future cheapo non-hazmat refills from Walmart USA.

I had the same done here in Langley before I sold the Paj.

It came out to just under 200 with R134 charge, evac and fittings.

200-250 seems to be the average.
