The rebuild kit doesn't answer the whole question re bolt up or no. I learned the hard way on my current project. All the books said I had a Chrysler 904 automatic with a "unique bolt pattern" in my 86. The rebuild kits for this tranny are identical to the kits for the domestic RWD 904 trannys. I bought a 3.9 V6 dakota engine for an engine swap in the hope that the "unique Bolt pattern" was the ubiquitous small Mopar LA pattern. It would have made a killer drivetrain for the Monty IMHO. But alas when we got everything out on the floor it wasn't even close. Not only did my recently rebuilt man trans narrow pattern 2.6 not fit, a wide pattern starion block was also a no go. So I'm converting the unique AT block to turbo specs minus the oil squirters.
For what its worth, I think you are worrying for nothing about future replacement of the diesel motor. Not in your lifetime will it wear out with regular maintainence. If you want more power, increase turbo boost, intercool it, up grade fuel delivery, and or add propane injection. I'm ending up spending much more than I had planned on this turbo build, more than had I just bought a 2.5TD drivetrain from ebay.
83 mitsu flat bed 2.6l weber, 88 auto tranny, 2" body lift, 4.625 LSD, 235/85-16E mudders (33 x 9.50).

My Paj is going to be a daily driver so reliability is key, not so much power. I can't be waiting a month for something to come in from Japan if disaster strikes. I'm just trying to cover my bases here for any future problems. I've heard that heads and head gaskets have a tendancy to go at anywhere between 60k kms and up, especially the Japan imports because they spend most of their lives idling. I think I'm going to ask for a spare engine/tranny when I buy the Paj. Right now I'm getting Mitsu to check out if the pitman arm recall has been done, and some paperwork has to be done with the Ministry of Transportation before I can buy it. Can't freaking wait!

The main reason besides obvious overheating that the heads/ gaskets develop problems is the stretching of the head bolts. Same problem on the Neon 2.2. If you convert to ARP studs, no worries.
Another thing on overheating is the corrosion build up in the cooling system after 100km. $65 US gets a boil out for the rad, another $35 for the heater core. Refresh the corrosion inhibiter every 2 years and again, no worries.
Oil builds up in the intercooler from the vent into air filter. Boil out, relocate the vent after the intercooler if its a problem.
The motor you have is at least as reliable as any gas motor. Parts for anything that's 15 years old are going to take time to find whether its gas or diesel. Swapping in a gas motor won't improve your odds.
